In December 1980, Ursuline nun Dorothy Kazel, along with Maryknoll Sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke and lay worker Jean Donovan, were murdered by the Salvadoran National Guard in El Salvador. The women were dedicated missionaries working to aid the poor during a time of intense political violence.

Their abduction and deaths on December 2, 1980, highlighted the severe human rights abuses in the country and brought international attention to the dangers faced by those committed to social justice.‍ ‍

Dorothy Kazel documented her mission work in El Salvador through a series of audio tapes. Her tapes offer a poignant glimpse into her dedication, compassion, and the challenges she faced.

Kazel's recordings serve as the basis for The Killing of Sister Dorothy, a three episode series about the nun’s experiences in El Salvador leading up to their tragic deaths.
